Whether you’re looking for commercial or domestic living or to let the outdoors in, Sliding doors are the future for any home or business.
What do I need? How much work will it involve? When do I buy my products? There are so many questions on ‘where do I start?’ regarding sliding doors. So Exclusively to Locks Online, we are here to do EVERYTHING for you! You tell us what you want, and we will do the donkey work! But where do you start you ask? Let’s begin with WHY?!
Why should you get a sliding door solution? There are several reasons why you should get the door solutions but the most important for me it that they are space saving and energy efficient! At home, if you have a living area and a kitchen you would like to open up, why not try a pocket hideaway solution or even a small interior sliding door system? This creates a separate living space but can be opened to create a large communal area, letting light into the house and giving you the all important space as there are no open doors, obstructing your precious space! I will explain the different types of doors, further down the article!
Or, how about ‘going large’ with a Bi-folding door to completely open up your home, letting the outdoors in! It’s just like being on holiday! Show off your home to your friends by opening your bi-folding doors to the stunning fresh air, and wowing them with the ease of achieving this effect! You don’t need to limit sliding door solutions just for doors to walk through. You can use them for wardrobes to hide clutter and maximise space, for small cupboards to hide televisions or music systems, and even in the kid’s room, to solve the never-ending sea of toys! The options are endless with these easy access systems, offering modern living, space saving and of course, the indoor/outdoor luxury feel.

So what are the different types of sliding door solutions?
Below I have outlined the different door systems, and where they can be used.Pocket Door System – These are used for doors you walk through by sliding open a door into the wall so it is hidden. These are becoming VERY popular! Bi - Folding Door – Commercial or domestic, these doors are used to bring the outside in, and to create a partition like wall which can be easily and effortlessly opened. Bi – Part Doors – These can be used at home or at work, again to create a bigger space or to open the freedom gateway to the outdoors. These work like opening a pair of curtains. Slide and Stack Door Systems – These are fantastic for business use and create a quick ‘slide out room’ within minutes. With the ability to stack away, this system is popularly used in the work environment. Pivot Door Systems – Mostly used on furniture, these door systems allow you to open the door panels out 90 degrees, and then they are pulled into designated slots to the side of the unit/wardrobe or cupboard. Folding Turnaway Door Systems – These again are used on mostly furniture and work the same as the pivot system however; the door panels are of the Bi-Folding range therefore maximising your space while using the furniture.
So as you can see there are many different sliding door systems that are available for many different types of applications. Along with these there are ‘need to knows’ such as what hinges you need, what material the door panel is, if it’s top hung or bottom rolling and much more. Don’t be put off with the amount of specifications you need to find out. Make sure you go to a suitable retailer (such as Locks Online!) who can do all the hard work for you!

What is the difference between a top hung and bottom rolling sliding door system?
It simply says it in the title. Top hung means that the door system is fixed and supported from the top of the door. These usually work on their own without the need for a bottom track or a bottom ‘rail’ as to say, as these systems are designed to take the weight of the door. (Read on as to how you can check what weight you need) You can if you like to have a bottom guide however these are usually recommended for door panels over the 1 meter size. This method of having a top hung door is great for security reasons as unless the door panel is larger than 1 meter, you will not need the bottom track, therefore preventing a trip hazard!
A bottom rolling door system is designed more so for the outdoor use. This is because they are usually fitted with a hidden seal meaning when the door is closed, the door is fully air tight ensuring warm winters as well as cool summers! Once the door is then opened, the seal is automatically pulled up from the floor, ensuring there is no drag.
How do I know what weight to choose for my door gear?
That’s easy, you tell us what your door panel weighs, and we will do the rest for you! You only need to add on a small amount of KG when deciding how much weight your tracks can withstand. For example: if you have a door panel that weighs 35kg, you will only need fittings that can withstand up to 40kg. If you decide to go for fittings that can withstand any more weight than you need, you will find the system will not work properly. Every fitting has been designed for a certain weight and some have a test cycle of up to 200,000 tries.
What different door panel materials are there?
There is a range to choose from. Depending on your application, (where you want the door and what it will be used for) you can use most of the materials anywhere such as glass: this can be used for a wardrobe, for a sliding door system inside the home or a bi-folding door for a cafe or restaurant opening. The most common panel materials are listed below:
- - Metal
- - Timber/Glazing
- - MDF
- - Hardwood
- - Softwood
- - Glass
